I think Porsche owns the majority of VW stock anyway, so I think this is something that actually makes sense..

It's not like they don't have a long history of sharing parts and ownership or anything...

It was the same family that started both. Audi, too. This is just cousins reconciling.

I always thought that they were together to begin with? Didn't they share designs or engines or something like that?

I wonder if this will say anything about future designs coming out of either.

^ The "Volks-Porsche" (Concept BlueSport): technique by Volkswagen and design by Porsche. Rollout planned for 2012........
Remember, in the late 60ies, VW & Porsche build the 914.

No that's not true. Audi was several brands that merged to form Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt.

Daimler-Benz owned Audi after WW2 -- Daimler-Benz sold it to VW in 1964.

Bad idea for Porsche. Would cause their resale values to plummet eventually. They would also have some clientele defect to other brands. Good for BMW, though

But VAG owns and has been selling much higher end cars than Porsche (Lamborghini, Bugatti Veyron & Bentley) that the resale values are not plummeting. Also according to the Times, it seems more like VAG is the one "buying" Porsche to save it from its $12 billion debt accrued from it initial fervent attempt to take over VAG.
