Thoughts on this suit...

Came across this on ebay...I've been looking for a cotton suit.




Is it me or does the lapel look excessively big??

I kinda thought that as well..but that should be an easy fix. This is supposed to be a 40R.

Not really big. The low gorge and high button stance make them look wide.

based on the picture, it's molto ugly.

well its fine then since you realize it needs some slight tweaking.

What makes a gorge "ugly"?? isnt it more placement than asthetics?

I am fairly short (5'8") so a higher gorge is better suited for my body (or so I thought).

That gorge is, IMO, a bit too low... would end up well below the collar point. There is definitely a stylistic aspect to the placement of the gorge, much like the width of your lapel dictates aesthetics.

Makes sense. Thanks. But is the gorge really that low?? Any higher and the jacket would close up at the pocket.

Man, that's boxier than a Volvo. Which is fine if you have a decent tailor that is going to bring in the waist to the point where you're no longer lost in pinstripe fabric.

If you're buying from eBay, do look up an eBay seller named style-wizard.

I think you may be confusing "gorge" with "button stance" The button stance is where the jacket is buttoned. The gorge is the placement of the notch or peak in the lapel. I base my button stance on my natural waist, hence the top button of a 2 button is usually at my natural waist. Low gorges are make the jacket look very dated. That being said a very high gorge makes a jacket look dated once the "fashion" has passed. I prefer a mid-high gorge, since it looks better on me as I'm short.

Thanks. I did indeed confuse the 2 and have confused the 2 ever since the term gorge entered my lexicon!

What is considered a high high/med/low gorge? Is the notch lines up with the shoulder, is this considered high or normal gorge?

these are all rough guidelines...

The picture posted has a relatively low gorge. a mid-high gorge will hit around, maybe a bit lower then, your collar bone (roughly). If you're shorter, stick to higher gorges and lower button stances. My top button is usually about 2-3 inches above my belly button at the maximum. ideally only about 1 inch below, and the bottom button would hit my belt.
As noted, if the gorge is super high, then it can become dated. It's currently "in". Back in the 90's, really open long low and droopy gorges were in. now they're smaller notches and quite high up.

why? it elongates the neckline making you look slimmer and taller. Lapel width should also be proportionate to your own "width". Skinny guys should stick to around 2.5 inches, and bigger guys can pull off 3 inches plus.

And lapel width is also inherently related to the width of the tie you wear with the suit. A fat 4" tie on a skinny lapel suit looks very strange, and the inverse is true.
