Is he really the musical act or is this a not very funny skit?

he has an album out of him playing the banjo... Lorne Michaels probably owed him a favor or something. I don't think it is a skit.

Steve's done it before on SNL. He's been a friend of the show since its early days, when the show was much less regimented and more freewheeling. If someone had an idea and they liked it, they did it. Jim Henson even did Muppet sketches, prompting writer Michael O'Donoghue to protest, "I don't write for felt."

He also recorded "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" (a real fast bluegrass standard) with Earl Scruggs, Vince Gill, Marty Matthews, Del McCoury, Paul Shaffer, and a buttload of others. The guy can play the banjo.

The banjo is a little harder than the guitar (especially if you don't clawhammer). I suck at the guitar, but I REALLY suck on the banjo.

"Foggy Mountain Breakdown" might be my single favorite instrumental. Done well, it's amazing.

I agree. It's incredible how a simple chord progression can just be amazing. That Earl Scruggs and Friends one I mentioned is my all-time fav.

I know it's a little busy or whatever (the drumming irritates me), but I slightly prefer this version:

The mandolin and harmonica are a nice addition, though I could do without the drums and electric guitar. In the version I posted, Paul's piano is distracting. Really, I like the plain vanilla versions best. No need to fancy it up. Not much to look at, but ...

Fantastic music to accompany dancing bears, America's funnyest videos or Benny Hill.

Steve Martin is as mediocre at playing banjo as he is at comedy. His inspector Clueso is an abomination.

Steve Martin played the banjo in a group at Knott's Berry Farm in the late 60's/early 70's {?}. It predated his stand up, in which he used the banjo as well.

I don't really care if you like the music or not -- your loss -- but it's ridiculous to suggest he's not good at the banjo. Not many people can hold the stage with Earl Scruggs.
