Tom James Custom Tailor?

Hi,

I made an appointment to go in this Saturday. I am planning on having a sport coat made to test them out. What should I expect from this? Also are they horrible and I should cancel, or are they worth getting a sport coat from?

They are great if you like high pressure sales pitch from people that dont know jack about tailored clothes and will over charge you for the quality you will get.

Hickey Freeman is having their MTM event at Nordstrom soon. Much better quality for probably a comparable price.

They said that sport coats were starting under $600. Is it worth it at that price point, or should I tell them I am no longer interested? When it comes to "value" custom sport coats the prices seem similar between this and Mr.Ned, which would you choose?

I've never used Mr. Ned (though I want to) and my boss used to use Tom James, he stopped due to the lack of quality based on the price....

I would say go with Mr. Ned. That mean's your in NYC so you have multiple options available to you.

I am in NYC. I have been using Bhambi's, but their sportcoats start at $1,400. A friend took me to his MTM guy, but I was not blown away by the results. I want to get some spring/summer coats made and due to the likelihood they will get ruined or have a dark drink spilled on light material I can't justify the Bhambi's expense. You would say decline the Tom James and go with Mr.Ned?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The only thing I'll add is once you buy something from them, you can expect regular calls (2-3x/week) at work trying to get you to buy more.

Avoid them.

Tom James is for men with more money than good sense (or style).

I had an appointment with TJ several years ago. Like you, I was all set to buy a cashmere sportscoat to try them out, when the saleslady said something to make me feel like I was wasting her time by declining to purchase an entire wardrobe at once. Fortunately, I decided not to make the purchase and have avoided them ever since.

On three seperate occassions a fairly attractive woman has approached me with a line to the effect of, "I really like the suit you are wearing, where did you get it?" Each time, I thought I was being hit on. Each time it turned out to be a Tom James rep trying to solicit my business. I highly doubt I would ever go to a suit maker that tried to find clients in such a way.

DING DING!!! I go to English American. Yes it is associated with Tom James but I wouldn't really speak of them in the same breath. COMPLETELY different experience. when you go to EA you work with a nice guy that runs a small shop - he isnt really pushy. He also only sells only one level of construction quality, which is pretty good with full canvas and a good dose of handwork (you can obviously select from a range of fabric qualities). The prices are very fair too - the last suit I got from them was about $900 and is made of one of their mid-range worsteds (H&S, don't know the book). From what I've heard/read over the past couple years on these boards (namely AA), the EA product is comparable to Hickey Freeman in quality but not as expensive.

Tom James is for the guy that knows nothing about clothes, doesn't want to know anything about clothes, hates shopping or thinking about clothes and is willing to pay a high premium to avoid it all.

MyTailor or one of the others is a much better option for this level of service...and less expensive.
