I got an invitation in the mail today from Who's Who. The last time I got one, I was in grade school; it made me feel special for several minutes before I was instructed to throw it out with the rest of the trash. Does anyone really take Who's Who seriously? Has Who's Who ever done anything positive for you?

Are you saying I should remove the subsection on my resume dedicated to my achievements in Who's Who?

Le sigh.

IIRC, you DO have to pay a small fee right? Probably one of Madoff's subsidiary schemes.

No. It's a pay-to-play scheme. It has no credibility.

Bummer. I wish I had come up with the idea.

My guess is that the company makes a lot of money. They have different types of Who's Who awards as well as other forms of recognition. For the most part, all that's needed to get on their list is to pay the fee. You can also purchase a listing of people who are on the list as well as other types of documents.

Who's Who is almost as stupid as the International Star Registry. And by stupid, I mean brilliant. http://www.starregistry.com/
# Q: Am I buying the star? # A: No. We do not own the star, so we cannot sell it to you. This is like adopting the star. This star is associated with that special someone. It is something you can point at to know that there is something special out there for you. # Q: Will the scientific community recognize my star name? # A: No. We are a private company that provides Gift Packages. Astronomers will not recognize your name because your name is published only in our Star catalog. We periodically print a book called Your Place in the Cosmos Â

which lists the stars that we have named.
