Traveling to India

I travelled to south India in Tamil Nadu. I visited Chennai, formerly called Madras, Madurai, Tiruvanamalai, Mamalapuram and Kanyakumari. It is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I travelled alone and was there for six weeks. Please don't hesitate to PM me if you're interested in knowing more about the south.
I went last summer to Rajasthan with my wife and kid. Great trip. I can recommend a guide/driver if you are looking for that kind of trip.

India is a huge country. As I mentioned in another recent thread, India is like Europe in that it is composed of many regions with distinct languages and cultures, connected by the common thread of religion and history. You cannot take in all of India in 1 trip just like you cannot do justice to all of Europe in 1 trip unless you want to spend 2 months doing so.
My advice to you is to read up on the cultural and touristy aspects of the various parts of India and pick a region that interests you to visit. You'll need at least 2 trips to take in all of the country.
My credentials: I was born in India and spent a good part of my childhood there before emigrating to the USA.

Go to Connaught Place in New Delhi and look for John Brothers. Bespoke shoes at reasonable prices. That's the SF aspect. Now for the cultural aspect. Depending on what your main destination is: if Delhi do Rajasthan (Udaipur and Jaisalmer are the places). If Bombay, go to Matheran. If Chennai - hit Kerala. There's entirely too much to do, so pick and read up on it.

+1 to all of this. I just got back a week ago from a two week trip to Rajasthan. It was a great trip and is a pretty standard destination for India. Fly into Delhi, go to Agra, and then go all around Rajasthan. There are numerous books (Lonely, Planet, Rough Guide, etc.) that focus specifically on this part of India. If you're not going totally budget, I highly recommend getting a driver. It's really not that expensive and makes traveling so much easier than dealing with trains. Indiamike is also a great resource, and I can also recommend a great driver and agency to book your trip. PM if you want details.
