Can anyone recommend me a good book store in Manhattan? Perhaps something other than a B&N or Borders?

Good for what?

The Strand is the gigantic used book emporium.

Printed Matter is good for art books.

The Housing Works Book Store in Soho has a nice environment.

Spoonbill & Sugartown on Bedford Ave is good for art books too.

I like McNally Jackson on Prince st. Also close by is Shakespeare Books on B'Way and Waverly, i believe, and if you head north on B'way you will run into the Strand.

Baumans (sic?) on madison has some interesting rare and signed editions. There is also a place in the west village whose name i can't recall which has the same.

Both are open 24 hours.

If you order a used book from one of the secondary sellers on amazon you're often dealing with Strand. I once found an almost perfect condition out of print Guy Bourdin book that was missing from my library that way and these Strand F***ers shipped from London even though the location said NYC.

I like that Japanese book store across the street from Bryant Park. The store is on 6th ave between 40th and 41st. You should go there.

I dont remember the name of the store, however........
