Germany audio manufacturer Burmester has teamed up with Porsche to offer a high-end mobile audio system. The new Porsche Panamera ($125,000 on up depending on configuration) can include the 16-channel, 1000 watt Burmester sound system. From the very beginning of the Panamera's conceptual phase, Porsche has created the perfect conditions for an ideal integration of the Burmester High-End Surround Sound-System. The careful and extremely precise adjustments and extensive trial-phase of all components were carried out in the enclosed Burmester Automotive Development Department during interminable listening sessions and with the help of elaborate, cutting-edge measuring technologies. As a result, the tonal concepts and pretensions of Burmester were fully transferred into the Automotive area. With 16 separate amplifier channels with an overall rated output power of more than 1000 watts, a record-breaking total diaphragm area of 2,400 cm2 is distributed to 16 loudspeakers that are especially designed for the Panamera, are the foundation and requirement for the distinctive Burmester sound. Despite this, the sound system has a remarkably low total weight. The loudspeaker cones, the crossover network technology, and the ribbon tweeter (Air Motion Transformer, AMT), characteristic traits of Burmester loudspeakers, are directly transferred from the High End Home Audio division. The rear wheel drive Panamera S and 4-sheel drive 4S come with either 6 or 8 cylinder engines. While the 3.6-liter V6 produces only 300 hp, the 4.8-liter V8 reaches 400 hp, with the turbocharged version of the V8 reaching 500 hp. Burmester is also partners with Bugatti for audio within their EB 16.4 Veyron automobiles.
Cool.

Why would you want to listen to music while driving a Veyron?

You don't think that a person driving a performance sedan doesn't also want good sound? They seem to go hand in hand to me.

I would worry about field interference -- the car is constantly in motion crossing those fields.

Audi has a Bang & Olufsen sound system that's apparently very good

With background noise several orders of magnitude higher than the average home, the results one gets from car audio are dismal.

Epic Fail. Have you heard the Mark Levinson systems in Lexus cars? The interior noise levels are so low that much resolution can be heard. I have an ES with the Levinson system and it is terrific. Very quiet and I can hear fingers move across the frets on audiophile recordings of guitar. Have heard the same thing in Infinity (though not quite as good) and the superb Elliot Scheiner system in the Acuras.

I don't think that word means what you think it means. If you can hear road noise, the engine, wind, etc. then the car is not quiet enough for high quality sound reproduction. According to Lexus, the top-of-the-line LS generates around 60 dB SPL of noise at 60 MPH. A decent listening room is some 30 to 40 dB below that, and human audibility is 60 dB below that. In other words, a decent listening room is at least 1000 to 10000 times quieter than the LS. BTW, hearing fingers on frets is hardly a demanding test of resolution. --Andre
