I'm looking to purchase an alligator watchstrap for my Omega Speedmaster:

First and foremost, do you think an alligator strap will suit this particular watch? I believe the case diameter is 40mm... Any suggestions on color? My options are black, dark brown, and honey brown. I am most likelly going with a Camile Fournet strap: http://www.equationoftime.com/eotstore/page2.html Thanks for the suggestions.

This will look good on black or brown, I have my silver Aqua Terra with silver face on a brown gator strap with white contrast stitching, and my Speedmaster Broad Arrow with a black face on a black one (linked below) which is glossier with black stitching. The black is much more dressy. I think I'd go black on that watch. I'd suggest you put the proper Omega strap with the Omega push-button deployant. It just looks right on that watch. I have a bunch of aftermarket straps laying around (mostly for other watches) but the Omega strap (no strap holders, and the tail of the strap tucks under the deployant) looks especially clean and elegant on a speedy. The strap is at the bottom of the page http://www.ofrei.com/page760.html The deployant and other straps are here: http://www.ofrei.com/page749.html You can often beat these prices digging around on timezone.com

What is the strap width that the Speedmaster takes? 18mm?

They vary, the moon watch and the broad arrow come on 20mm, but I think there is a reduced size that takes an 18mm. The deployant comes in both 18 & 16mm. There is at least one gator dress strap that drops 20/16mm, but most Omega straps are 20/18mm drops. You can usually get your questions answered for specific models over at the Omega forum on Timezone.com. Or you can order through any authorized dealer to check the size, sometimes they are willing to pass on a good discount, especially if they sold you the watch to begin with.

I probably have a contact somewhere for a dealer in VA who prices things pretty fairly. PM me if you want me to dig it up.

I have almost identical watch to that (maybe older / newer model) - can you put up a pic if you do change the strap? Would be interested, thanks

Are you looking to make the watch more formal or are you going for a casual look?

For a more formal look:
what about a navy blue alligator strap or black?

For a sportier look:
tan or light brown leather straps
brown alligator/ostrich straps (Sirtolli make a good strap I hear)

I have a chronograph watch that I dress up with a black alligator and dress down with a brown leather strap.

Chocolate Brown alligator with white double stiching. The one that I have is made by Camille Fournet.

Also, if you want to get creative, I highly recommend ordering a custom strap from ABP Paris.

I have a chestnut alligator and a really dark navy blue, almost black from them as well. They are both stunnung.

It just depends if you want a dressier look or sportier look on your Speedmaster.

In my hunt for an alligator watch strap (in blue no less) for my seamaster I came across this guy via TZ: www.fredawatchstraps.com

I was debating purchasing the Di Modell Louisianna Alligator strap, and if you're in the US he'll throw in a set of watch tools and free shipping.
