You mean Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Detroit aren't major cultural centers?

This is pretty accurate. Chicago is a huge city with a lot going on, but it's not really like New York. NYC metro is more than 2x as big as Chicago metro.

Chicago is a really easy place to live for the city life. But, the weather is absolutely horrendous. All seasons pretty much suck compared to just about anywhere in the west.

I don't know about much out west, but you're right. We have about 8 weeks of good weather a year. The winters are brutally cold and the summers are unbearably hot and humid. Although NYC isn't much different in that regard.

Im partial to NYC. Lot more things to do, can travel to other cities easily and just a more fast paced world.

i think chicago has more soul to it at this point. ny is pretty well scrubbed.

ny has more douchebags

chicago has more actual slums and more fat people. i like both cities. would live there if i didn;t live here. i think chicago burbs are preferable to ny burbs.

NYC is better in an absolute sense, but Chicago is more livable. You don't have to be rich to be middle-class in Chicago. To put it another way, I'd rather visit NYC but I'd rather live in Chicago.

I grew up and Chicago and went to school in New York. There was no question in my mind where I was going to make my life: New York. Almost everything Chicago does, New York does better. Well, maybe not corruption. Chicago is a great city in many ways, but it is a regional city, and every time I visit, I can't get away from the sense that it is the capital of the midwest. It pulls from the area, where as New York pulls from the world.

Marshall Fields is now Macy's, of course.

An old quote of John Lennon:

"John Lennon had loved New York from the first time he visited in his Beatle days, and considered it the cultural center of the world, as evidenced by his comment: "If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome. Where else? Today America is the Roman Empire and New York is Rome itself."

Still some truth to it.

Chicago safer than NY? I don't think that is the case, I am not sure it is even close.
I hate these NYC v.s another American city comparisons. No other city here is comparable, it may be more to ones liking, but NYC is still in its own league.

I'm talking about living in the city. Not the south side of Chicago. You can walk around at Midnight and feel safe. I have plenty of friends that have lived in New York including Manhattan that have many stories of being mugged.

As much as I'm a NY hater, it's a better city than Chicago based solely on the fact that I live close to NYC.

May be because I have spent so much more time in Chicago then NY, but Chicago really doesn't have any magic.... it doesn't feel like you can go on an adventure and find something amazing in Chicago like it does in NYC... So much to explore!!!

OBVIOUSLY the highend restaurants, fashion, etc. in Chicago are not as good as NY. I didn't read the thread yet, but I hope that there isn't 2 pages of people pointing that out...
