The Grand Seiko's have replaced my Omega's and Rolex's.

I have one of the Japan market seiko spirit watches (SCVS001). It's a beautifully made watch with a 6R15 movement that compares very well to the swiss ETA.

I couldn't be happier for less than $300. I think the japanese market seikos are often an extraordinary value. With the strength of the yen currently, however, they are a bit more expensive than usual!

Couldn't agree more with the OP. I own five watches and three are Seiko. For 90% less than Omega and 93% less than Rolex you cannot beat the value play.

I like this site for Asian watches:

The recent Seiko Design Project models for me shows how much the brand strives to better themselves. And the models aren't bad at all:

and here's one from last year's Design Project:

2006divermainpx1.jpg

The 300m saturation diving waterproof specification, one of the measures of professional divers, was assumed and a one-piece structure where the movement was inserted from the top of the watch was adopted. There is no plate on the back side, which reliably eliminates one "part that needs to be opened and closed" that leads to the risk of exposure to water and also decreases the risk of the watch being caught on a diving suit. The rotating bezel is fixed by a separate screw clamp at the lug base, which increases convenience of maintenance. Concavities and convexities on the urethane band ensure that the watch tightly fits the wearer's arm, which thins due to pressure while diving. This system was also developed by SEIKO and is now an icon of the diver's watch.

Seiko= some of the best value in watches today. My Seiko Monster diver kicks the **** out of my Brietling Chronomat for time keeping ability for a 10th of the price.

One of my favorite $300 Seiko Spirits -- a bit of a "poor man's" Grand Seiko for a fraction of the price.

I love that, how did you get that dial? Put on yourself or someone else?

Yes, it's nice to see that someone is working on new movements and designs in the high-end market. I, haven't seen it in person, but the new Seiko Springdirve movement seems pretty cool.

Compare that to Rolex which hasn't changed anything in, what, 40 years? ETA/Omega isn't much better. With their stranglehold on the high-end Swiss watch market, not much reason for them to try to improve, I guess.

I love Seikos! Great value for the price and they offer some very subtle/ plain designs.

I like my Spirit quite a bit. I normally wear it with a grosgrain band:

I like mine. Going on 28 years. I imagine it's a cheapie - what does 'Quartz' mean (it's on the dial under 'Seiko')?

Means it has a quartz movement. It takes a battery

Yes, Seiko is generally criminally underrated - outside of Japan and WIS/collector circles, that is.
