I watched the Golden Globes last night. I don't expect Hollywood actors to dress particularly well these days, but I noticed that many of them were wearing black suits instead of tuxedos. Is this something that's been going on for a while that I didn't notice, or a new trend?

I think we had a thread on last year's globes or Oscar, maybe resurrect it to compare? I honestly don't know if it's specific to actors but I'd say lots of younger men don't care much for tuxes and I can't really blame them although I do like the look.

you just didn't notice the "hollywood black tie". still better than "california tux" tho.

not surprising to me that hollywood does not adhere to SF's style sensibilities. hollywood guys get away with a lot of things, especially on the red carpet. But were tuxes ever mandated for these type of events in the first place - especially when red carpet is during the day anyway (I don't know, that's why i'm asking)?

It's an evening event. They start it in the afternoon so that it can be seen live at 8 pm EST. Of course, the red carpet arrival has started earlier and earlier over the years.

My former girlfriend (I wish) Eva Longoria had the best frock...JLo minus wedding ring was also booty central. As for the guys what was that with the tie and tux thing? Yeek!

I know that the awards are in the evening, but the fact that these hollywood folks are out on the red carpet during the day, I figure there is flexibility in the perception that this is strictly an evening, black-tie affair, hence the acceptability of suits.

What does one do if one arrives to an event in the afternoon, that is intended to last into the evening? Wear a morning coat or a tux?

Maybe I didn't phrase that as well as I could have. The show is an evening event. It begins at 8pm EST. If people show up at 5 pm because it takes three hours to get through security and run the gauntlet of interviewers it's still an evening event. Now take all that and roll it back three hours to accommodate the time difference between the two sides of the country and you have an evening event that begins under a midday sun. So, when people show up at 2 pm PT dressed for the evening, they are correctly dressed. The flexibility/black suits comes from the fact that it's Hollywood and they pretty much don't give a **** what the igentry think about what they're wearing. Their focus (rightly so) is networking and banging starlets. lefty

I really hope the explanation for that outfit is that he had to beat someone up and take their clothes because he sold all of his for drugs.
