I don't live in Edmonton (yet), but truthfully I don't even find West Edmonton Mall to feel that big at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's #3 or 4 on the "biggest" list these days. In terms of shopping in the sense that we like, I'd have to believe that WEM has had no negative effect on the rest of the city at all. If anything, it has likely pushed the better stores to the more interesting areas near Whyte Ave for example. It likely has also helped bring the higher tier H&Ms, etc. to the city (i.e. over Calgary) - if you consider H&M a positive. Edmonton is definitely no Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto in terms of shopping, but Calgary definitely isn't either. I'd be interested to see what others think however.

Edmonton doesn't really seem to have any boutique type stores that you see in downtown Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary even. My experience shopping at West Edmonton Mall left a little to be desired. On the other hand, if you need a new bong, love Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle it is a great mall. Personally, I resorted to playing craps at the casino and riding water slides at the water park.

There are a lot of stores in WEM that no one goes into... not sure how the 100+ Canadiana stores survive.

There are a billion malls with much better shopping than WEM. There is really not that much impressive shopping at all. I guess it does not help that the whole of Canada does not have a department store even to the calibre of Macy's.

Stazy is the other main SFer from Edmonton that is a regular around here. I've been meaning to contact him for awhile, but this thread will take care of that (I imagine).
I don't know how I missed this thread but yah, I'm from Edmonton. I thought I was the only one to be honest.

I have heard that Amsterdam Tailors should be good. But I am in the same boat. I got a jacket butchered at Europa Tailors in WEM.
Hahaha Europa Tailors. Thank you for confirming my suspicion that they are total ****.

I disagree. There are good stores all over the city...you just gotta know where to find them. Edmonton has better shopping than Calgary. Gravity Pope Tailored Goods alone puts Edmonton ahead of Calgary...
Since we're on this topic, does anyone know of a good tailor in the city? I need a couple shirts darted and the sleeves taken in on a rather expensive Canali jacket, which I don't want to leave to chance. A place to get MTM shirts for less than the $200 Harry Rosen charges would be nice, too.
Sam Abouhassan is probably the most renowned tailor in the city. That being said, I'm not sure if they do alterations or just MTM. Their shirts start at $250.

We should get all e-mail Joe Hemerajani from MyTailor and ask him to make a Edmonton stop on his next tour. His shirts start at under $100 CAN including shipping. I already ordered one online, but I need to see and feel the fabric swatches in person to properly judge it. John the Tailor does a good job. He also does excellent quality shirts for $200-$250 (better than Harry Rosen's Satoria program.) Avoid Holland Tailors like the plague, the asshole there can't sew in a straight line and trashed one of my shirts.

The polyester MTM suits in the window didn't tip you off?

They don't do alterations. And I don't think he actually makes his own suits.. for some reason he's listed on Samuelsohn's website as one of their retailers.

I tried to buy some MTM shirts from him once, luckily the fabric was out of stock and I got my money back. I'm not sure if it was me, or it's just the way he is, but he seemed totally indifferent to me throughout the whole process. After I walked out of the store from my measurements, I realized he didn't even both to ask me if I wanted french cuffs or button cuffs.

Calgary here as well.

I wouldn't lament over that too much. Calgary lacks any stores I wish to shop in or products I wish to buy, save Alden's from O'Connors or Filson from Hansen's. Otherwise, it's pretty much homogenized dullness. One can hope the Holt and Harry Rosen expansions do something to break that up, but I don't hold out much hope.

By the by, to the Calgary folks: anyone got some advice for a good tailor? I've used a couple of tailors outside of the in-store tailors, and haven't been overly happy, so any direction would be much appreciated.

Phaneuf is looking a little lack-luster. Nothing like Lombardi though, who chokes on apple sauce if it's not cut up for him.

Yah, they carry high end street wear. Among others, they carry Raf Simons, W+H, Filippa K, Acne, 5th Avenue Shoe Repair, and Fred Perry.

Phaneuf is indeed a douchebag. I played hockey with him. Not a fan.

Sam is a tailor at HR and I've always had pleasent experiences with him, and his work had been great. The only problem is they often won't let you bring outside purchases in for tailoring, but there are ways around it..

Though I cannot comment on him being a douche, he is pretty overrated. I assume you are an Oilers fan?? They seem to be going through tough times as of late.

Also, is there not a Gravity Pope on 17th in Calgary?? I could be wrong...

Pretty sure the one on 17th only sells shoes. I'll have to check out this special one in Edmonton next time I'm up.

Interesting. I'm family friends with the Regehrs and know Rhett Warrener decently well. I'm not a fan of either Alberta team however.

Now that we've got this thread rolling, where would you guys suggest I live in Edmonton? (i.e. As a young stylish professional interested in culture and design, where would you ideally locate yourself in the city regardless of cost?) I will be living with my longtime girlfriend - not sure if I should buy or rent, but that is a whole different story. I'm going to be on campus nearly every day for 3 years as I'll be there for my Masters; that said, I don't intend to "live like a student" whatsoever. Preliminary thoughts?

I'll be in Edmonton many times this coming Spring checking things out - I'll gladly meet up with you guys for advice and good times, or whatever.
