Has your interview attire EVER been commented on?

How often has an interviewer commented on your attire during or after the interview? Also, if you have conducted an interview, have you ever changed your opinion of someone based on their clothing? Thanks!

yeah, I had a guy once say to me "you strike me as all bang and no flash"
I liked it, but I wasn't sure that he meant it the way I interpreted it.

When interviewing I always look at their extremities - hands & feet, this tells me a lot about their care factor.

The eye's & facial movement also tell me how composed they are & how much they want this.

Then their deportment & how they project themselves, & tend to be the the 2nd to last panel so the candidate had been checked - now my org just wants my take on the "x" factor.

But if they slip through, by BS antenna goes crazy & then "mind-map"them on the white board post towards the end of the interview & 'bullet-proof' everything they have told me as well as what I have gleamed from their summarised CV.

I hate bad sales people & how they give sales such a bad rep.

As for what they wear, they have to be comfortable & subtle in their skins - very obvious when they are not & this is what leads to bad dressing due to one not knowing their self.

What tick me off straight away:
- tacky accessories, cuff links, jewellery etc
- ill fitting suit & shirt
- shoes that are NEW or not cared for
- too much cologne (you'd be surprised how many)

If they look good I compliment & wait & see what they say about me.

The most I've gotten is "did they tell you you didn't need to wear a jacket and could wear short sleeves." My response was that yes they had, but I thought I could make it through the heat in the jacket and that I owned no short-sleeve dress shirts. Then shuttered to myself at the very idea of a shortsleeved "dress" shirt.

I got the job.

- looks is the first & final part of any people facing role, by the time it's up to me to meet the candidate they have gone through all the tests & tests & presentations etc. So I usually step in when they can't decide etc.
- though my role is sales (though on an executive level - client relationship level), my firm is in the research & market intelligence game. We have had some brilliant candidates on paper but just crumble in person & vice a versa.
- life is one big sales job & as I have always been told, every captain or leader came from sales never from the engine room, finance/accounting etc. so one has to try & have a total package or at least have the "x" factor.

No offense, but you come off as very bitter. If someone wearing cuff links or new shoes in an interview ticks you off, go out and get laid.

Great information, PG. It seems intuitively true based on what I know from others, but it looks like you go one step further than most (which is in my opinion a good thing).

My interview attire has never been commented upon by interviewers. Thank God, since that is the point. But it has been praised by friends and acquaintances on the way to the interview. That does help with the confidence factor.

- I should have been more detailed.. I mean tacky cuff links.. As for shoes I mean new in fashion forward.. - & yes it has been a few days & I am in a new country & yes I have been flying every 2 weeks for the last 6 months trying to get a regional team put together so I am at my end..

Why do some people, when coming upon good advice, get angry at the advice-giver and insult him, instead of learning and thinking about why it is good advice?
