One of my favorite things to do in new places is check out the local grocery stores, especially if they're chains I've never heard of. Because local grocery store names become so ingrained, it sounds silly when you hear someone say another one in a familiar context.

If you say "I'm going to the Shaw's to get some milk" to someone who's used to saying "I'm going to Harris Teeter to get some milk" you may as well be saying "I'm going to the spank" or "boink".

What are your favorite local grocery stores and grocery store names? "Publix" made me

That is exactly the kind of feeling I am talking about. Who ARE these weirdos??

In Somerville we have a place called Market Basket. The prices are about a quarter of Whole Foods prices, but you feel a little bit
uhoh.gif
the whole time you are in there.

Haha...my mom loves that store, especially for their fruits.

I feel that way whenever I'm in Whole Foods (or the infamous Weaver Street Market) and see the malnourished 8 year olds with grey skin, staring up at me with their sunken eyes as if to say "please, please, can I just have some Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, or sugary breakfast cereal like a normal kid????"

When I lived in Savannah, the first time I drove by a Piggly Wiggly I said to myself, "That is where I want to do my grocery shopping. I want all my grocery bags to say Piggly Wiggly." So I finally got around to going to one and it was probably one of the biggest disappointments of my life. Of the 3 major grocers in Savannah (Piggly Wiggly, Kroger, & Publix), Piggly Wiggly is by far the worst -- and that's saying a lot considering how bad Kroger was.

Schnucks or Dierbergs. They dominate the area. Dierbergs is better.

Slightly OT, but do you guys say grocery or grocery store?

I'm going to the grocery. OR, I'm going to the grocery store.
