How to determine the quality of leather?

How can I tell if certain leather goods use quality leather? I can line my Tramezza's up to my old rainy day kick around shoes and I can tell you which one is nicer, but other than the shine, I am hard pressed to describe the differences. Does anyone here know a lot about how to determine the quality of the leather with the naked eye?

With modern methods of "cheating" it is hard even for experts to determine the quality without destroying it.

Though some SF members, just with a quick glance, can determine whether the leather is corrected grain or not.

How do they do that?

That is quite easy: The leather looks very polished, almost like plastic and is missing any natural skin marks.

As a *very general* rule, if you bend it, cheap leather will form many small creases whereas better leather tends to form fewer, larger creases.
