Do you use them? Trust them? I know many people who keep important items in them but I still have yet to use one. What have been your experiences? What kind of items do you keep in yours?

I have one. I keep a usb key that stores encryption keys in it along with some cash. I may also start storing monthly computer backups in it, just in case. Oh and my birth certificate and SIN card. If there's ever a fire and I lose all my ID, it'll make things a hell of a lot easier.

I don't have any personal input, but at the watch forums I frequent, everyone who has a "special-occasion" watch (read: costs more than your car) keep it in a safe deposit box, not at their house. The retrieve them on the way home from work, or bring them home to take pictures...then back to the box.

Don't have one. Keep my ID cards and some papers and such in a fire / water resistant box. Renting an apartment and paying on my car, so no deeds or titles right now.

What's the ballpark cost for a small-ish box? For the papers and cards and stuff. I'd trust the box at the vault in a bank more than the box in my apartment.

Mine cost me like $35/year. They're surprisingly cheap.

Is the process for putting things in and out of them as wickedly badass as the movies make it seem?

Its where I keep my pistol, in-ear broadband police radio, ASP Baton, fake passports and ID's, $50k in USD, CNY, and EUR, as well as 2.5million dollars in non-traceable rough diamonds, a quick disguise, and a vial of hydrochloric acid to dispose of anything I brought with me into the safe room that I cannot take out.

Oh, and some baseball cards.

Not at my bank. The process is pretty straight forward but, there are precautions...just don't be camera shy and if you are claustrophobic, you may have a problem!

Homeowners documents, titles, deeds, some cash..nothing too crazy. I don't keep passports there just in case I ever have to leave unplanned and the bank is closed.

They have right at the door, as you and the bank rep enter a rather compact, secure room!

I hate them, i have to open them for people all the time when im at work. I think its way cooler and smarter to just hide things in your walls or under your carpets etc. since it's not like the things you keep in the boxes are insured anyways. you can always access your hiding places in your home whenever you want to bot just during bank hours.

I keep most of my docs and stuff in a fireproof safe in my closet. I would love to have enough cash to merit keeping a box at a casino in vegas
