I'm interested in buying some fabric for my next custom suit, instead of picking from their fabrics. (That's because I'm in east Asia and the choices at the tailor's aren't that great). I'm not sure exactly how many square meters I need. Assuming I'm average in height and build (actually more on the slim side), how many square meters should I need for: a. one pair of trousers b. one single-breasted jacket c. one waistcoat Also, while I'm on the topic, the website I'm using to buy fabric is Minnis & Hardy at http://www.hfw-huddersfield.co.uk/hardyminnis/index.asp. I'm very confident about the quality there, but does anyone happen to know of any less expensive sites? Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

Have your tailor tell you as the requirements vary from one to another. And patterned cloths take more material for pattern matching.

But if you have to pick a number, 1.5m for a pair of trousers, 2.5m for a jacket and .5m for a vest are all generous. That's for double width fabric (most cloth comes in bolts that are 60" wide and the numbers given are lengths - sq. meters are not used in the trade).

4.5 yards (~meters) for 3pc is the typical answer. fabrics r sold in length (width is standardized)

You should talk to the tailor who will make the suit for you. He is the best person to tell you how much fabric to get.

I was always told 5 yds for a 3 piece, but maybe my grandfather made a lot of mistakes
