Turning a 38 overcoat into a 36?

I'm looking at buying a deeply discounted RL overcoat but its a size 38 and im a 36. Is there any possibility of tailoring it down a size and is it worth trying? I'd rather not buy it if its not going to look right. Any thoughts?

Any skilled tailor can perform the alteration...the bigger question is whether you will cancel out the heavy discount you benefitted from with the added cost for the renovations. Not cheap to reset the shoulders, bring in the chest and waist, shorten sleeves and raise the hem in any combination or in total.

it better be very very very cheap because the alteration cost will be high.
if there is a breast pocket, it will be too close to the armhole.
the lower pockets will pull backward a little.

Any skilled tailor will advise you against this, basically you'll be recutting the whole coat.

you are dollars ahead to sell the jacket for a profit (if you can) or return it and buy one that fits.

recutting the jacket is quite expensive, and presents a few problems, you cannot move the breast pocket in and you cant reposition the side pockets.

Unless of course they're patch pockets.

It may well work if we're only talking slight changes, but as with most things....it depends.

Thats pretty much what i figured. Re-cutting the whole jacket is not exactly ideal. I'm going pass on it if its going to be that much trouble.
