Why does the website slow to a crawl around 1am eastern?

Yeah it's crazy. Between midnight and 2 or 3 central, it'll be fine for 5 minutes then won't load at all for 10. On and off the entire time.

I was just assuming slowed servers due to peak usage time. But I guess that really isn't peak usage time is it...

That might be when the server runs backup and maintenance.

The service provider is most likely running a daily backup and the disks are running at max speed.
