I couldn't think of polling parameters, so name your year/era/player that was the last time SNL was funny.

I think when they lost Hartman, Myers, and Lovitz was the last time it was funny.

you know, its pretty hit or miss most of the time. I really haven't enjoyed it in the last 6 years all that much.

The problem is that it was never all that funny.

When I was watching as a kid, it was the heart of the Dana Carvey/Mike Myers/Phil Hartman era. They did some funny stuff, and the best of that era does have some real classics, but I was like 13 years old and mostly just happy to be allowed to stay up past midnight. And even then we took it on faith that "Saturday Night Live sucks today. The Belushi/Aykroyd era was the best and it's been all downhill ever since." We said that not getting any of the older humor.

I think kids today would say the exact same thing today. Maybe they think Samberg is funny so they tune in through all the crap, but they probably take it on faith that SNL has sucked since Hartman died.

The show has never been all that funny; it just happened to spin off a few megastars in the early running, and it sits in a time slot where it competes with nothing, and now it's got momentum so cancelling it would be more negative publicity than it's worth. The show will never go away.

With the exception of the recent Sarah Palin/Tina Fey skits (and that's only about 5 minutes in a 90 minute episode...thanks Hula), it hasn't been funny in years. Last time I would laugh pretty hard was when Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, etc. were regulars.

The fact of the matter is "yes" it has not been funny in years. Are there any suggestions on what could make this funny again? I would suggest, with an exception of a few cast members, fire everyone and start anew. Lorne Micheals use to have a talent of finding no name comics and turing them into superstars. I would like to see if he could do that again......

It really went downhill after Farley's death and the loss of Carvey, Spade, et al.

Although I think Will Ferrell was funny on SNL, and this is coming from someone who thinks his movies are almost all pretty mediocre. Cheri O'Teri and a couple of others had their moments.

I agree, it's always been hit or miss, and I think that nostalgia makes it seem funnier than it was, for the most part. I have never seen a show that didn't 50% suck. And I think nostalgia makes things like the Killer Bees and "buzzing off," or Murphy's Buckwheat, funnier than they really were. Sometimes...well often...they'll come up with a really funny concept, but not be able to sustain it or think it through, and it ends up sucking. That Tracey Morgan animal show guy was one. Dieter ended up sucking, because they went to the well too many times. Etc.

I think this season has been pretty good and a clear improvement from previous years. When Justin Timberlake hosted was actually an epic show, and among my favorites of all times.

I'm starting to think that I only recall the really good stuff and have forgotten all the filler. All the highlights can fill an episode or two, and they're mostly pretty old. for instance:

Happy Fun Ball
Super Colon Blow

"Jane you ignorant slut"...I use this one periodically hoping someone would catch the reference but all I get are hostile stares and purse beat-downs.
