You usually end up settling for what the establishment has. I mean, I usually end up settling for CC, because few places in the States have premium Canadian whisky. One of my frequent haunts has Tangle Ridge, which while not one of my real favorites, is better than CC. They could not get Wisers, but could get Tangle Ridge. It has caught on enough with other patrons that it is now their premium Canadian whisky, vs. CC, which is the usual premium.

I find the only brands, which are ubiquitous enough to be common, are the drink de jeur for douches.

Just curious, how do you all find out what booze they have?

Just sneak a peek at the bar while you walk by?

Order something and see if the waitress/waiter knows what it is?

Ask them to list what they have in a specific type of liquor?

Jack, neat. Jack on the rocks. Jack & club soda. If no Jack, I panic and leave said social event.

Depends on the event. If it's somewhat formal but the bar is limited, I'll get tanqueray and tonic or if it's cold I'll get Maker's Mark and some sour mix. If the bar is more expansive, I'll ask for rangpur gin, lime juice, tonic, and a splash of cointreau.
If it's informal, I usually get a Corona. I can pace myself better and it's useful for gesturing.

I decide before walking in the door whether I plan to laugh at the guy who gets wasted and makes a fool of himself, or be that guy. How I decide determines what I drink.

Brands?

Don't be fake. Drink different stuff and figure out what you like.

Way to broad of a topic. I almost always have different beers and wines every time I go out. The only thing I consistently get is Belvedere for vodka.

Hard alcohol. Sometimes beer, but not if I could help it.
