I am seeing a lot of nice items for sale in the sales forums. I am wondering how it is possible to sell $5000 items for 20% of the cost, for example, when these items still have tags attached. How were these items acquired by the seller? Are they real? Is it in poor taste to ask specific sellers these questions?

Curiously,

Moo

Some sellers (Ed, chorse, e.g.) have (acknowledged) relationships with people in various places that allow them to procure merchandise at vastly reduced prices. Others of us keep an eye out at discount stores (FB, Daffy's, etc.) and department store/boutique sales and pass along savings via B&S.

Asking about merchandise is a touchy subject. Sometimes it is well known where people acquired particular items (e.g. during last summer's Daffy's Incotex frenzy). Other times, it is not so clear.

In my book, the only ironclad rule is to keep those sorts of questions (and anything other than positive comments about merchandise or requests for measurements, more detail, etc.) out of the thread itself and to ask them via PM.

I also think that a lot of sellers here don't use B&S as a solely for-profit enterprise, but rather as a way to clean out their closet and, if possible, pass on a good deal to members who could use the stuff. if they make a few bucks, cool... but I think in general passing on good deals to our e-friends is the name of the game.

I'd much rather send a pair of shoes or a suit or something at my cost or even at a loss (if I'm not using the suit or shoes) to a young guy who could use the stuff. Last month I sold a suit to a new graduate who needed a suit for work; even though I paid almost $800 for it on sale, I wasn't wearing it and so after a year or more of not having put it on, I was happy to send it to him for $180 or thereabouts.

Ebay is no fun; you can make more money, certainly, but half the fun of closet-cleaning or selling SF-worthy items is getting to "meet" other members via sales and discuss items with them personally via email or PM.

i don't know how or why, but I'm glad they do. It's helped to build my wardrobe over the past year significantly faster than I would be able to if I was scrounging around on eBay or *gasp* paying retail!

This stuff comes in waves too....there is some SERIOUS merchandise over on B&S right now.

Make sure that you get items with an accurate MSRP tag so you can know exactly what single digit percentage of that MSRP you are paying.

My current threshold is 3% of MSRP.

Would MSRP be Mullet's Suggested Retail Price?

I pay 1% or less or I feel like the items I got were crap. I've started this new policy one week ago and, so far, have been able to procure napkins. The cold is definitely a problem and so are the screams of passengers in the subway. I hope to move on to swimming trunks by next week if I can find a sweet deal.
