What's the point in closing jacket vents with thread?

Just to prove that the jacket was never worn?

It doesn't aid in tailoring at all?

I've just begun purchasing suits and sport coats and have noticed many jackets have their vents sewn shut. I can cut it myself, right? I don't need a tailor to do it?

So the vents don't get folded over...

People like to see basting thread. It makes things look high end. It is more of a signaling issue than anything else.

Yeah, it aids in tailoring.
When you first put on a new jacket, close it (not button it) to a point where it air kisses your hips, i.e., very, very close, but not enough to pull or wrinkle. Check the distance between (center of the) lowest button and (inner end of) the corresponding button hole. The inbetween difference is the amount you want the jacket (hips and below) taken in. You can't do this properly unless the vents are tied.
