I had a suit recently altered by Sydney of Sydney's on Queen W. I'd trust him with pricier goods, and he has experience working with more "fashion forward" (ie slim) cuts. Also has a nice selection of SW&D-type product in the store, and offers bespoke suit and jeans for those with the $$$. His site is: www.sydneystoronto.com Worth checking him out if you're downtown.

I know people who have had good luck with Beauchamp on Wellington, not cheap though. They also do semi bespoke shirts and suits.

I go to club 10 tailors in Promenade mall (Thornhill, Bathurst North of Steeles). Like a good tailor
1. He understands what you want, and explains what will work or not, and will even tell you when it's a bad idea or not worth the money
2. You pay, but you get what you pay for
(I would apply the same 2 rules to find any competent tailor)

It's pricey as usual, but it's a mental relief to know it'll probably be done right. The asian lady around the corner working out of her garage it nice, but after messing up a few things a few times, it's hems only for her from now on

I've been pretty happy with Xavier Custom Tailors (10 St Mary St, near Younge & Bloor). Avoid Davenport Custom Tailors -- for some reason, they've been written up all over the place, but the work they've done for me has been universally slapdash, and none of the people working there are particularly helpful or willing to listen.

i ended up giving these magic tailor guys a try. it was recommended by some custom suit guys at yonge and king. very reasonable prices, cash no tax and it seemed like they knew what they were doing.

I'll let you know how the coat turned out when i pick it up next week.

excellent thread.

Good to see a lot of Torontonians on this site.

I've heard that Raffa at Yonge Eglinton does some pretty nice tailoring, I've yet to check it out myself though.
