I think he's hilarious, movies & standup. The episode of the simpsons he was in is one of my favorites.

I understand how influential he was, but I still can't get into his stand-up. He was incredibly grating to me.

I think the grating part would have been intentional.

But it's all contextual...real "alternative" humour no longer exists...it's all mainstream.

Chris Rock can entertain as many stadiums of Joe lunchboxes and suburban house fraus with as many "*****" jokes as he likes...he'll never do anything important, and never have to worry about spending time in Rikers.

Lenny was never funny because he talked dirty. Lenny Bruce didn't tell "jokes". Lenny Bruce didn't have an on-stage "persona". He never catered to an audience. Lenny made you see the satire in hypocrisy.

As someone once said...was Lenny Bruce funny? Doesn't matter...he was important.

Pryor is number one for me. I saw him on tour in '78 and almost had a stroke at age 16. I couldn't catch my breath from laughing and crying so much.
