that's because there's a huge difference between doing something different at a time when it *was* different/shocking/eyebrowraising (in the 70s), than doing it with hindsight as retro-reference (hipsters today)

C'mon. I understand that. I was merely talking about the clothes/ensembles themselves. Also, i'd argue that it is as almost acceptable to dress like that now as it was in the 70s. It is perfectly acceptable within that counter-culture both then and now, although the mainstream views them very differently. I do agree with you on the retro-reference bit though. Also, props for the jonathan richman pic

He is a god. And also super nice. Seeing him last month was a great mark off my musical checklist. Still upset i had to work the night waits played in jacksonville. Would've been another mark off.

I forgot you can't understand and appreciate a music/time period unless you lived it despite having not only listened to a majority of music from the era intently, but also written on it. My mistake.
