For new pairs on sale, $500 or less has pretty much been the benchmark, depending on the size and desirability of the size. More if the trees are included. Less than $400 is an excellent deal.
That said, prices have been heading upward. Looks like it won't be long before $650 is a good price.

[taking off the monster hat] Do not compromise on fit for the sake of a deal. Whether you get them for $200 or $1200, recognize that these are quality shoes that could last you 20 years with appropriate care. Make sure the length, width and last are appropriate for your foot, and don't buy without having been able to try on the shoe.

That is actually not far from the truth, coming from this inane poster I'm amazed. I would also have a close look and try on the various lasts, to check which might be the one you prefer.
