tell them you are a customer and are taking pictures to get your wife's approval before spending thousands of dollars during a recession

if they persist, show them a business card from work, to prove you aren't working at competitor

they'll back off, and in most cases, they won't say a thing (99% of the time)

it's a public place, you have a right to take pictures if you aren't a competitor

be polite

Now that's an interesting shoe. Who makes it? Any other details?

No it's not, and no you don't. It's private property. You are a guest. They have the right to tell you to stop taking pictures or else leave. It might be another story if you were taking pictures from the sidewalk looking in, however.

It makes it easier when your companion is a pretty woman. Short of that, pretending to not understand English is also useful.

99% of the time, nobody at a store will ever say anything to you, as long as you don't use an annoying flash

just turn the flash off before going in and they won't even notice or care
