Calling all SF Goths (current and former). . .

So what is (or was) the appeal?
Even in my pre-teen years I could never relate.

This NYT article got me thinking.

I believe it would be acceptable for a SF goth wear a black suit for business.

I was not a goth, but I liked goth girls in H.S., mostly because they did not feel the need to be constrained by conventional thoughts about relations with the opposite sex (a.k.a, they would actually ********, as opposed to talking about it). I was extremely partial to this girl who was from one of the richest families in Florida, was skinny as a rail, and liked fishnets and studded black leather.

Just to prove we all grow up, her house was recently profiled in Palm Beach Life magazine, and she was wearing Lilly Pulitzer

It seems to me that the great majority of these subcultures are filled up with fat, physically unattractive people, which frankly, is not surprising. Oftentimes, they are quite unintelligent as well. It's very proletarian.

times have changed but the goths I knew in HS and college were usually pretty skinny and some of the smartest most well read and overall intelligent freaks I've ever met

Ok, people, let's work this out together. Culture is a function of location. First, the driveway is not paved, and we can not see the local byway. What looks to be an aerial is visible on his right, further evidencing such a distance from a metropolitan area large enough to host a television broadcast antenna that his television, even augmented with 'rabbit ears' can not pick up a satisfactory signal.

The imposing distance implied suggests no easy access to the cutting edge fashion, trends, and culture necessary to express oneself beyond the broad cookie-cutter labels of jock, nerd, outsider. Our young friend here is obviously displeased with, or unsuited for, the two former, and thus has chosen to exemplify the latter.
