Okay, why I think John Terry deserved that red card today against New Castle:

One can argue that you have to be the last defender to get the red. In this case, Terry thought he was the last defender. His back was to Carvalho, so he couldn't have known there was another defender. I'm not sure that meets the strict rule, but I think the referee has good reason to think Terry deseves the red.

Oh, and no shock that Robinho wasn't enough to lift NCU over Chelsea.

I've just found out that there's no such thing as the "last man" rule.

The actual rule states that a player should be sent off if they commit a foul to deny a goal-scoring opportunity, taking into account such factors as the distance from the goal and the location and number of other players.

However, it seems that the referee issued the red card for "serious foul play":

I think you'd have a hard time arguiung that Jo was denied a goal-scoring opportunity; they were practically still in the centre circle when they collided.

With that said, it was a terribly cynical challenge. I hate John Terry with a passion, and such a cheap tackle as the one pictured above further reinforces his cuntitude. He deserved to get sent off just for being John Terry (and I always enjoy seeing him get upset).

The FA is considering a special John Terry/Joey Barton rule that will allow referees to give a pre-emptive yellow card to players going by either of these names the second they step on the pitch. Best idea they've had for ages.

And I'd side with the referee on this one. That was a rugby tackle and deserving of a straight red, goal-scoring opportunity or not.

I hate Terry, but Barton is a whole 'nother class of villain.

I hate John Terry also. Everytime I see him on TV arguing a call, it looks like he's about to cry if he doesn't get his way.

Seeing him cry during the CL Final was a sight.

Seeing him miss the PK shootout was the greatest. It must be a great feeling knowing that you cost your team the CL.

Wow, lotta Terry hate - I'd chime in w/ mine but I don't won't everyone saying how much more they despise Totti. Quite anxious about today's CL clash with Cluj. Given our rocky slow start and injury woes I fear for the worst....

Let's hope not. They won the Romanian league, but are supposedly off to a slow start this season....

And in Terry news, the red card was rescinded (sp?). Taken back.
