XM 70 (Real Jazz) played two hours worth of the Jazz Fest today. I caught about 30 minutes and it was great.

Wish I could have gone.

I was there Saturday, Sunday and today. Just got back home.

Some Highlights:

The Latin Jazz All Stars feature Steve Turre (trombone), Ray Vega (trumpet), Arturo O'Farrill (piano), Dave Valentin (flute), Yunior Terry (bass), Pete Escovedo (timbales) --Shelia E's dad, Phoenix Rivera (drums), and Chembo Corniel (percussion).

Special guest Kenny Burrell

Dr. Barry Harris
Benny Golson
Lewis Nash
Jimmy Heath
Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band
Hot Club of Detroit

Honorable mention goes to the crazy Brazilian band Cyro Baptista & Beat the Donkey--the only band that could play "Twenty First Century Schizoid Man" and Carmen.

The biggest surprise was that the streets were full of...people. Yes, people! It is first time I've been in Detroit in over twenty years and seen the downtown streets in use, teeming with people.

^Roy Hargrove jammed all over the festival! He blew the doors down with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. See him live if you can.

Did you get to hear Dee Alexander? She is one awesome jazz vocalist, one of the best in the world. The sad thing, she is almost unknown outside of Chicago.

Mulgrew Miller played a wonderful set with bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Winard Harper backing the lovely, sexy and immesely talented Dee Dee Bridgewater in a literally breathtaking tribute to Betty Carter. They especially rocked an uptempo version of Betty's signature tune, "Tight" and they closed with a stunning verson of Nina Simone's "Four Women" which brought down the house.

Dee Alexander was also amazing - she preformed with Ed Wilkerson's Eight Bold Souls (). The band is based here in Chicago (in fact, bassist Harrison Bankhead regularly backs Dee). Dee sings every Wednesday at the new, bigger and much better Jazz Showcase. I've also seen Dee at the Green Mill (a few months ago she nudged me with a big grin after I nodded off during her backing trio's warm-up tune) and Pop's for Champagne
