On the other hand, if brands like Hermes and LV are dipping into denim to expand their brand instead of make it their brand, are they going to track down the best methods and materials? Will they produce a product that is just as good, or better, than the ones produced by companies that only make jeans? I'm curious about that.

Agreed. What makes a pair of jeans high-quality is a matter of craft, not "design".

It's like the feeling when you go to a thrift shop and find a pair of selvage denim. It's exciting and I think that's what you're going through. If you want something exclusive and at the same time a great product, stick to the Japanese man. It's just that much cooler. No explanation needed.
Thank you, my friend! I have ultimately decided (thanks for everyone's input, btw) to let these sit in the Hermès shop while I continue to break in my Rag & Bones... Japanese denim is the best!

Couldn't find a pic online anywhere (and they'd probably frown on me taking a pic in the shop) but they basically look like your typical high-end raw Japanese denim: http://blueingreensoho.com/site/inde...mart&Itemid=28 but with lots of Hermès orange thread... and the patch is just an outline of where a patch would normally be (done in Hermès orange thread) with the actual patch on the inside So they're really not too different from some APCs...

Maybe you should buy them, take pictures, and then decide that you don't want them any more and return them.

Eh, too much work... they weren't really anything special -- just a very solid, well-made raw denim like RRLs or something... Nice and stiff, deep blue color, selvage... but the patch shouldn't add $500 to the price, if you ask me... it was a cool patch though. Just imagine no patch at all, but then orange thread sewn around the perimeter of where the patch would be if it were there. Like a "ghost patch" or something like that... the good thing about the jeans is that you'd be the only one wearing them -- you'd never run into someone else wearing a pair of Hermès jeans. So you could have the excusivity factor going on... but if you really want exclusivity, you could plunk down $1,660 USD for these: http://www.japanblue.co.jp/denimhouse/item/50.html

Bottega Veneta did a lot of jeans this season...passed by their store in Landmark mall and the menswear mannequins wore jeans in a loose-ish straight leg style that was reminiscent of workwear. Interesting to see somone present such a contradictory fashion statement...high end material used to produce something of a low end aesthetic. Something about the duality of something like that I find interesting in fashion, even though it doesn't exactly generate a feeling of authenticity.
