Tapering legs = Loss of selvage?

I have an alterations question. I have a pair of PRPS's that I took to a tailor to get tapered. I want them tapered to a leg opening of 8.5", they are currently 10". The tailor said she would have to taper them from the selvage end and that she would have to cut the selvage off. I asked if she could taper them from the inside seam. I was told that since the inner leg seam has outseam stitching it would be to difficult to get the outseam to match up after tapering. They also cannot chain stitch the leg opening (which was to be expected).

Should I let them do this? I don't want to loose the purple selvage line (i know, its kind of silly). I just dropped them off, and was told it would be a two week wait so its not to late to go back and get them. I am thinking I should have just mailed them off to self edge to get this done.

I did ask this question in the ask a question get an answer thread, and I did do a search. I need clarification on if a tailor can use the the inner seam to taper

Thanks for any advice in advance

People have taken jeans to HTC/Denim Doctors to have them tapered on the inner seam... from the pics I've seen, looks like they do great work.

Ask them not to cut the selvage off. If she can't do that, bring them to another tailor. She's right about the inner seam. It would be difficult to replicate without the correct tools, which most neighbourhood tailor probably wouldn't have.

agreed. it is possible to be done on the inside seam. I don't believe SE does tapering. Send them to denim doctors in LA.

Why not just create an extra seam? You know, a third seam? Then you'd have something truly original at the end.

now thats not a bad idea. in fact thats a great idea.
place it down the front where the crease would be. or down the back where the crease would be. or both front and back.

the APC new cures don't have a selvage line because they are tapered.

I do not know about others
