New loafers - how to judge fit

I needed a pair of slip-ons, and so I just picked up a pair of J&M Horner in saddle tan. I really like the look of them but I'm not sold on the fit. It seems like the size is right, but they are a little loose around the ankle. I don't know if that's just what i should expect from slip-ons, and I'm too used to laceups, or if it's just not a good last for my feet, or something like that.

So - what should I expect?

I like them and I think I can make do with them, but I don't want to settle. thanks!

I'm presuming you are experiencing a bit of heel slippage? Heel slippage is common with new shoes, whether lace, monkstrap or loafers because the soles are still stiff and don't flex enough so your heel stays in the heel cup. If you really have the right size, I believe the heel slippage should reduce over wear, but maybe others can chime in.

I had the exact same question for the staff at C&J when I was looking for loafers. One pair was a bit snug, the other with a bit of slippage. The saleslady insisted that I needed that loafers were meant to be snug at first as they would stretch a bit.

I ended up going against her advice and getting the looser ones. The looser ones broke in nicely and don't have slippage issues after a few weeks, but as she predicted they are slightly big, although still wearable. I wish I could trade them in for the smaller ones, but it's too late now.

Yes! I said ankle but meant heel. It's good to hear that that is something that breaks in. I think I'll stick with them then.

Yeah, this pair was as snug in the toe as I could go, it was just the heel throwing me off. Thanks for the input!
