Strangest Reason Behind a Poll Ever: SF Heavy-Hitters Please Weigh In

I just got a call from my buddy who's an associate a law firm. He told me his fellow associate buddies are razzing him about wearing a brown glenplaid suit with a solid sweater vest. He likes the look and I do too. His buddies, however, think it's lame.

Here's the funny part. He asked me to find him a source with the greatest weight possible to confirm that sweater vests are stylish under a suit. All votes are more than welcome, but it would be nice for some heavy-hitters to weigh in as, again, he's asking for the greatest support for his argument.

I shouldn't be doing this because I play softball with these guys. My secretive SF life will be exposed, but what the hell.

Thanks for helping out my buddy. And no, this isn't one of those "buddy" as a strawman type of questions.

I love it and do it often. I like both cardigan and pullover sweater vests.

it's good, just keep the jacket on. otherwise wear a normal sweater with sleeves.

It really depends on the execution. When its done correctly, it looks great. In other cases, you may look like a history professor at a liberal arts college.

I think Shetland sweater vests and waistcoasts are great for this purpose, as long as the suit is solid or has patterning that is very, very subtle.

I voted yes, but the real answer is that it can be stylish. It can also be a disaster.

Depends on the nature of the suit (weight, formality) and the vest. For example, a 8 oz super 150s navy suit would look bad with a a thick fuzzy cashmere. but I love pairing flannel and tweed suits with appropriate vests when it gets cold. Nice way to dress down a suit and add interest, without the negative connotations of a suit vest. I did this for a (finance) job interview once and got the job.

Wouldn't a shetland be too heavy for this?

How would you feel about a solid color (say maroon or navy blue) vest under a bold patterned sportcoat?

I do it all the time. Same matching rules apply - pick the sweater color to match a thread in the coat. Looks great, and it's a real advantage of bolder fabrics in sportcoats.

I agree. He's not the type to wear wild patterns. I imagine he only wears solid vests (which he apparently has on today). I know the suit he's wearing right now, a nice HSM GT in a muted light brown glenplaid. His only habitual shortcoming is his love for romance explosion paisleys.
