GTA 4 is just amazing. This is after just 5 hours of play or so, but if it can keep up this kind of quality, we're talking about one of the best games ever.

It's even got Bas Rutten on one of the tv shows. Good stuff, I spent fifteen minutes just watching his show.

Also, I'm seriously loving all the new radio stations. Listening to the "Journey" station while driving around at night feels just like being in a early Michael Mann film (think Thief or the legendary scene from the first Miami Vice episode). <3

GTA IV.

I've been playing for a couple hours now. As someone who has been sick of the series, I have to say this game is really, really good. It removes the worst parts of the old games (the cheese and inconsequential nature of your actions) while molding a realistic, breathing city around the best parts. The story is great so far and the characters are lovable (even Roman). It isn't GTA as you know it but something much greater. Got it on a whim today and I'm glad I did.

New-generation(2nd? 3rd?) 360, the so-called Falcon unit, does not have those problems. AFAIK. Easy way to tell - does it have a HDMI output on the back just beneath the regular slot.

If so, the heatsink technology has been boosted and the output dropped. Should run indefinitely without Ring o' Death.

People say that your status as a game journalist is easily measured by the swag and review copy you receive. Some folks get Halo-themed Xbox 360s, PSN cards worth hundreds of dollars and month-early copies of Mario Kart Wii. I get a copy of Emergency Mayhem a couple weeks after release.

I don't even game much these days, but I picked up GTA4 mostly because of my brother's enthusiasm for the game. Now I'm totally immersed in it. Am especially intrigued by the idea of (potentially) divergent story lines--decisions you make now will affect events later in the game. Superb. But I'm also happy that I can still take a bat to a car driving down the road and get into an old-fashioned throw-down.

GTA4's major flaw is that despite an incredibly matured narrative and style, the excessively ribald humor is still there, the strip clubs are still there, the ragdoll physics are way over the top, etc. It just has too many moments of immaturity for it to be really perfect.

That said it's fantastic, no doubt.

Mauro, you play COD4? What servers/what's your usual screenname? I'm pretty sure I'd remember it if I ever got a kill notice for "Denimbar".

I was just thinking the same thing, but more about the core gameplay mechanics than the humorous accoutrements. Walking out in the middle of the street and jacking whatever car whenever you need to get somewhere just doesn't seem like something the protagonist would do. GTA has, for better or worse, retained virtually every gameplay element from the days when it was a goofy arcade game with no story where the object was simply to rack up as many crimes as possible.

I think that the oddball stuff being so detached from the narrative is a testament to just how strong it is. I don't want to go on wild killing sprees now because it doesn't feel like something Niko would do.
