I'm baffled as to what kind of fabric makes up Michael Corleone's Grey suit in the Godfather Part II (as pictured below). Could someone kindly point me in the right direction? Note the lint type appearance.

I'd guess it was silk.

Ive checked up on many silk suits and none that I have found have that lint like appearance...maybe an improvment on the silk weaving technique now days...

EDIT: Thanks Manton! Now to find a Dupioni silk suit..

It's not lint. Dupioni silk has characteristic silk slubs like that.

I think it's cool. I don't think I've ever seen a similar suit.

A couple of weeks ago Dallas hosted the AFI Film Festival and the downtown Neiman Marcus store did an "old movie" theme in the store. The men's department secured 15-20 old Robert DeNiro costumes from various movies and had them on display around the floor. Several were very interesting, but the one that really caught my eye was a petrol blue Duponi silk, three piece number with turnback cuffs on the jacket. I believe it was one he wore as Al Capone in the Untouchables.

Not something I'd wear, but pretty cool.

Do you think your mother in law would prefer to snuggle down on Al Pacino?

You almost certainly have to go the custom route to get a Dupioni silk suit.

Is there a difference between dupioni and shantung silk?

Yes, shantung is much rougher, with more pronounced slubbing.

Is it common for bespoke tailers to use/source dupioni silk?
