What would forum-members recommend for a MTM Brioni Suit Pants - zipper or fly-buttons? I was advised to go with zipper for convenience and also "cleaner look".

I liked the idea of a button fly, and had one put on my first MTM Oxxford. While I still admire the extra craftmanship and detail that goes into handmade buttonholes as compared to a zipper, from a practial perspective a button fly is a pain in the a--. The fly also doesn't close quite as flat (great grammar!) as a zipper fly...I've gone with a zipper since then.
I collect Esquire magazines from the 1930s which is about the time zipper closures replaced the button fly. Most issues have advertisements for the zippers extoling their convenience, reliability, and improved aesthetics compared to a button fly.

I quite like the button fly found on a few of my English trousers. Yes, they are a bit more difficult to operate, but there is far less danger involved!

gefinzi -- do the Esquire magazines have articles regarding the peril posed by those newfangled zippers?

And there's the snag! Your argument caught my attention, and it has a lot of teeth.

Go with the buttons; I do on all my bespoke suits. Almost every zipper eventually fails, and seems to do so at the most inopportune moment.

I used to say zipper, but I've opted for button flies recently on a whim.

Zip with trousers or 'informal ' suits BUT buttons always with a formal suit. This is a principle and to me is a key part of the detail of suit a garment.

When I was ordering my first bespoke suit from Tom Mahon, he advised me to go with a zipper, because the buttons will fall off eventually. I have a buttonfly on some of my suit pants, and I think I like the practicality of a zipper more.

I like a button fly on all my pants. I have them on custom items and try to find them on off the rack stuff as much as possible.
