I was just wondering if it was possible for a tailor to change a zippered fly to a buttoned one on a pair of dress trousers?

Doubt it as button fly pants have three layers of fabric (the fabric that the buttons are attached to, the fabric with he buttonholes and the fabric that covers the fly) and the zipper pants only have two and the construction between the two is different

Agree that it seems unlikely. If you were fine with a different fabric to make up the inner pieces of the fly, maybe, but you're looking at an expensive alteration. It would be much easier, I imagine, to turn a button fly into a zipper, but still not cheap.

I agree. It's best done if you have extra fabric from the hem etc.

I've seen the opposite done. I have a vintage tait suit from the 1930s on which a tailor converted the trousers from button fly to zipper.
