Can someone give me the lowdown on these two lines? I have been searching but lots of conflicting information.

Construction: Canvassed or Fused? Material qualities? Basic suit shape?

What prices do you think these should go for? BNWT only.

I saw a canali proposta that I really liked, black with a reddish brown pinstripe going for about 400 dollars, but couldnt buy at the time. Want to make sure if I see it again, I am fully armed to make or not make a purchase.

Same thing with Zegna Z, though they seem to run 50-100$ more than the proposta line. Seen plenty that looked good, but I dont know if they are worth the cost.

    Thanks,
    Scot

i haven't seen a canali proposta but i have seen a zegna z. it was right next to a zegna napoli couture at nordstrom rack and i liked the z 10 times more.

the z label is fused and made in mexico but the silhouette is very handsome-no apparent shoulder padding, slim waist, and double vents. the suits have a 7" drop. the material on the one i saw was almost suede like, though the label said 100% wool.  i would have picked it up (for $499) if it had been my size. i believe they sell for $850 at saks.

btw, the napoli couture looked like an ugly sack suit. big pads, no waist, and no vents. i was shocked. i didn't like the fabric either. the only reason i believe it really was a n.c. was that the seam that runs down the middle of the back was hand stitched. it was also selling for $499.

I have one Canali proposta jacket which is not fused. In fact, I don't believe any of the jackets in this line are fused (I have examined quite a few and all had canvas interlinings). The line is fairly standard Canali in terms of quality and appearance, although they try to promote it (proposta) as offering more of a youthful image.

I have seen several Napoli Couture XXX line. They look OK.. but nothing spectacular. I would much rather buy Attolini from Ebay ..

With Zenga Z, the line is for younger generation. Thus their suits have nice slim cut to it. I like it. Ususally $300 more than Hugo Boss suits, but Z's fusing is much softer and fabric is better than BOSS.

I own a Canali Proposta that is not fused. It's a herringbone gray 3-button that I really like. I also own suits from the normal Canali line, and like others have said, I don't see much of a difference in terms of quality. The Proposta line is just marketed toward younger people; it is not analogous to Armani black label vs. Collezioni.

So what about costs? What would you pay for the Canali or Zegna Z?

Since it looks like canali and proposta are equal, with different cuts, I'll combine the two into one catagory. I have seen the regular Canali line at some good prices, and possibly have a deal for a few suits going. Wanted to make sure before I pull the trigger. (350-400 ea, free shipping, but will have to pay import taxes... anyone have any ideas on what the taxes will run importing into the usa? Personal use only, not for resale.)

Assuming you like slim cut suit and canvassed, then I would get Canali with 13xx body. Older Canali's model number which starts with 14xx has 7 inch drop on the wait. But with 13xx models, the drop is 8 inches.

Zengna Z is fused. If you do not mind fused suits and like modern look, then Z is good garment i think.

Well I paid $795 for my Proposta (BNWT) at Saks. I believe it was marked down, but I needed the suit for a function the following day and wasn't paying for it in any case, so I didn't pay much attention. I have seen them retail for even higher, though, so I would have to say that 350-400 for one is a superb deal. I have gotten quite a bit of use out of mine. I can't speak for Z, as I only have purchased the other Zegna lines.

I will admit that last time I saw Zegna Napoli Couture (September of this year at the NYC Zegna store) that I was less impressed than in previous years. Alas, I own several sartorial Napoli Couture items from seasons past and not only the quality, but the cut as well was a lot better.

Maybe Zegna is becoming too mainstream?

    Jon.

scot, the Saks at Stony Point Mall in Richmond now carries both the Z Zegna line and Canali (I saw the regular line today, they may not have Proposta). Their Z selection was small but Canali was surprisingly decent given the men's dept. size. I checked out a couple of the Z sportcoats and they seemed good to me, definitely fused but nice fabric and cut IMO. Salesman called it Zegna's top line [IMG] gotta love genius salesmen. Canali has always been one of my favorites, but hard to find at discount in my size. Is your source someone you could share with us? I'm looking to get a couple of sportcoats.

Most sales people are idiots; just take them with a grain of salt... Jon.
