Does anyone have strong views on whether, on a generic basis, whether Zegna or Loro Piana produces better cloth? And what differences are there if any in the manufacturing process?

Doubtless there are differences in production processes but that is quite irrelevant, they are both satisfactory cloths.

Are you thinking of buying fabric or buying a product made of their fabric?

On the fabric front both sell just their own product but if you're buying finished products then Zegna sells suits made from both their own and other mills fabrics -v- LP who only use their own.

Not sure what intrinsic differences you think may exist between the production methods? Both use onshore and offshore operations, both are fully integrated from sheep to finished fabric.
