Zegna shirt ruined me

Somehow I missed the whole Zegna thing, probably because it didn't look edgy enough to me. So I was in their Chicago store yesterday and tried on this beautiful cotton (with an itty bit of linen) slim-fit shirt. I think they called it their Milano line, but they may have been referring to their suits.

Anyway, it was the best cut bar none I have ever worn. The shirt quality felt excellent. The pattern had just enough life to it.

Problem was, it was $375. Off the top of my head, I don't think I've paid more than $200 for a shirt, and that might have been some Black Label Polo piece.

Is $375 a bit ridic for an OTR shirt, or is that what you have to pay for the particular cut? I have a few MTM (usually in the $150 range) and while they "fit" me perfect, they don't seem to exude even an ounce of Zegna's style, if that makes sense.

Oh yes..."ruined me" in the sense that now I'll be hard pressed to enjoy my shirt collection.

They are nice shirts. You'll enjoy your first made to measure shirt more, and pay a lot less. Try mytailor.com and get measured in person. Bring the Zegna if you'd like to get it copied.

Some tailors can get Zegna fabric directly to custom make your shirt.

I do not know cost comparison to Zegna's OTR shirts as I am too humble to afford such luxuries.

There's nothing magical about custom-made shirts. If the RTW fits, is made well and feels nice, go for it. Whether it's worth $400 is up to you.

this is what i've been saying all along. While MTM will technically fit you better then OTR in terms of measurements, what's totally missing is the style, the design aspect that makes you look a certain way. It's the cut, not just the measurements. Besides the marketing budget, part of what you're paying for with designer stuff is the good taste and creativity that the average person doesn't have.

that being said, i would never pay that much for OTR, so hunt ebay or whatever for those shirts at discount.

There's something to be said for a shirt with a "cut" rather than fitted to your precise measurements. I like mine with a fitted waist and a fuller chest. I think it looks better, and it's certainly more comfortable.

Here's an example of a carefully (more or less...) fitted chest on a custom-made shirt posted on a shirtmaker's blog. What do you think...

That may not be fair since that guy looks too oddly shaped to fit into RTW. But whatever.

If you really like it that much and are having this whole MTM/OTR debate with yourself, why not order the shirt MTM from Zegna? It may be even more pricey, but you will then theoretically have the ideal shirt. Take that to have copies made from a place like MyTailor.

1- for business use (i.e a super plain OBD), maybe- for fashion use, no. I paid £300 for a liberty shirt once... as master classes said, it's all about the designers cut and how your body works with it. Think levi 501 'anti fit' jeans rather than perfectly tailored chinos 2- Part of the game i'm afraid, my advice is never go window shopping

This is a ridiculous example. That lady is not a buyer of custom mens shirts.

i am a bit confused by the "model"

Zegna makes a shirt in Switzerland that is very nice. Same as tom ford.

the shirts made in Portugal are good. but not amazing.

Zegna does not produce shirt fabric.
I have bought leftover Zegna fabric. but it comes from an assortment of European mills.
