I just got an email announcing how proud Zegna was to be making clothes from recycled plastic products:

ECOTECH is the latest cutting edge innovation from Zegna Sport made from 100% recycled plastic sources. This innovative and ground breaking production process combines high level technical performance with the protection of the environment.

I certainly want to protect the environment but wearing clothes from recycled plastic products rather than wool, silk and cotton does not seem like the best way to do it.

I like it. Assuming this is for athletic/utility wear and not suits, if you're going to be making fabric out of polymer strands instead of natural fibers, recycled plastic is the ecological choice. It doesn't change the fact that wool, cotton and silk are environmentally friendly, sustainable and renewable resources.

Cotton, not so much. It requires very high inputs of fertilizer, water and (usually) pesticides. At a guess, wool is likely the 'greenest' fabric, although the more processing involved the less that is the case - loden vs super 200s for example.

lots of fleece (patagonia, north face, mountain hardwear) use recycled plastic so this is nothing new

Not sure if that's really true. Livestock either requires large amounts of land for grazing or requires large amounts of land to be used to grow food for the livestock.

John Muir actually referred to domestic sheep as "locusts with hooves".

Not that any of this would get me to give up wool for plastic.

Will it be cheaper? If not, then GTFO.
