Zegna Jacket Question

I just bought an unstructured linen/cotton Zegna sports jacket, and I like every thing about it except that it has a ribbed/elastic, knit internal collar (yoke?) that extends above the main collar by about half an inch. In other words, when I'm wearing the jacket, you can see this knit collar as well as my shirt collar above the neckline. Odd. I'm pretty sure my tailor can remove it, but before I ask him to do it, does anyone know what the internal collar is for? Are you aware of any reason why I shouldn't remove it (assuming my tailor thinks he can do so without damaging the jacket)? Thanks for the help.

are you sure that when you put on the jacket that the knit fabric is not being pushed up.

Yes, it stands higher than the collar even laying flat. I'll try and get a decent pic.

Is it for keeping your neck warm?

I have an ancient Jil Sander windbreaker that has this sort of sleeve lining thing that extends down past the end of the exterior jacket sleeve. It is a styling detail. It's probably something like that.

Here is a photo. As you can (hopefully) see, the knit collar is sewn along the top of the jacket, and extends above the jacket's neckline in the back. It's actually a very comfortable feature; it just looks odd sticking up out of the jacket.

Does it not fold down the other way? It is hard to tell from your photo if it really is supposed to stick up. If so I guess it is to keep the rough linen from scratching your neck? Which seems weird since your shirt collar does that anyway...

Perhaps it's supposed to be worn without a shirt collar?

T-shirt only? That seems even weirder. From the limited pic it looks like a pretty standard soft SC so I don't think it is that "streetwear".

For some reason it seems like something Steve Jobs would wear...

It can fold down, but is sewn in such a way that it tries to pop back up. The jacket itself isn't streetwear looking at all. If not for this collar thing, it's about as formal as an unstructured jacket like this can look.

Believe me, I'm confused by this feature, too. Fortunately, I don't think it will be hard for my tailor to remove (or at least trim down).
