I don't know which god of tailoring proclaimed four sleeve buttons to be the norm but I don't think it should be set in stone. All my suits and sports jackets are three butto fronts, and there's a nice symmetry if they also have three sleeve buttons but I don't sweat it if they don't. When I get round to going bespoke it will be three for me.

I don't think too many people would notice or care whether you have 3 or 4 (or 2 or 5 or none for that matter) buttons on your sleeves, so I would agree that 3 is fine.

Four button sleeves on suit coats; three button sleeves on sports coats...unless they have a single button fastening in which case one button sleeve as well!

How about two on one sleeve, three on the other. I have a coat like this. It's badass. I get compliments all the time.
