There was a student film I made in college for a Philosophy class, about a soldier in WWII contemplating eating a banana. I did it in black and white and used some instrumental french music for the background. I think it's my greatest movie thus far.

I don't know about the greatest.

But Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove is definitely top 10.

Garden State comes to mind. The one who flew over the cuckoo's nest as well.

Some of my "good cinema" favorites include City of God, Do the Right Thing, No Country for Old Men, and 2046. Some of my sentimental favorites are The Sandlot, Billy Madison, and Wet Hot American Summer.

"Starship Troopers." No matter how many times I have seen it, if it is on I will watch it. Also "The Godfather." I don't know about it being overrated, but again, if it is on I will watch it. "What About Bob?" is one of those movies that just makes me laugh everytime. "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Another never miss it movie for me. Other than The Godfather, probably not your "normal" list, but I do love those movies!
