Carl Orff 'O Fortuna' :p

Seriously, maybe Mozart's clarinet or flute and harp concertos. Beethoven's Fur Elise and Moonlight Sonata are nice and of course there's always Brahm's Lullaby.

I generally don't like 'soothing' classical (or at least I don't listen to music to be soothed) so if I wanted to relax and listen to some music I my favorites out of those I listen are probably Beethoven's.

I agree with why, I don't typically listen to classical music to be soothed. But I think Gustav Holst's Saturn and Venus (from The Planets, of course) are very calming.

^^^ yep, I seldom want anything soothing, but when my son wanted something to drift to sleep to I went for Erik Satie - Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes, & Nocturnes. I might also add Bach's Cello suites and Well-Tempered Klavier (but not all of it).

I see that you changed your question, so I'll give a new answer. My favorite classical music is mostly composed after 1945. I'll give you the names of some of my favorite composers along with some of the pieces by them I like best: If you're not accustomed to more recent classical music, these will sound odd to you at first. But once you get used to them, they are extraordinarily beautiful.

Pierre Boulez: Le Marteau sans Maitre, Repons, the three Piano Sonatas
Karlheinz Stockhausen: Hymnen, Helicopter String Quartet, Gesang der Junglinge.
John Cage: Roaratorio, Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano
Morton Feldman: For John Cage
Helmut Lachenmann: Salut for Caudwell
Du Yun: Obliteration
David Lang: Little Match Girl Passion
Randy Gibson: Agua Madora
Michael Levinas: Par-dela

Schumann Pno Cto
Ravel: Pno Cto

Is that Vietnamese? Cambodian? I wonder why Schumann and Ravel would title their pieces in those languages?

Recently I've been listening to a lot of Satie and Bartok, but my tastes are promiscuous.
