Your daily racing commute

The fastest way for me to drive from my home to downtown Austin is on a road called 2222. Google Maps gives you a decent idea but it's hard to discern elevation. The road winds around the mountains right next to the Colorado River. The recommended speed limit is 45 mph but I average about 70 the entire way, nearly 100 on the straightaways and 60 on the turns. It is quite dangerous. When I didn't live near 2222 I would go joy-riding there a few times a month. If the possibility of an accident is say, 1%, then a few times a month is not too dangerous. But now that I live there and drive 2222 at least once a day the likelihood of an accident has climbed dramatically. I drive an automatic 4-cylinder 2002 Accord and regularly beat 911s there, but I think it's more that they're scared to race than me having a better car.

I live in the country. Getting to my home involves several miles on dirt roads.

I drive a Subaru WRX STI. I'm a big WRC fan, and also a rallyx competitor and my daily commute gives me a dose of adrenaline and rallyx practice (but my wife wonders why I go through tires so fast.)
I take pride in a well controlled 4 wheel drift, with all 4 tires clawing for traction around the bends. It's even more fun in the winter when the dirt roads are snow-covered.

I also drive an STi, but unfortunately, my commute involves getting out of bed and walking over to my desk. Occasionally I make a pit stop at the bathroom on the way.

I have to make excuses throughout the day to get out, sometimes just to drive. I'll go to the post office that is further away or along a more fun route. Or I'll do small errands for friends. And yes, tires are expensive on this car. I'm already halfway through my new Azenis, but I hope to be done so I can buy a new set next summer.. I'm gonna try for 275's.. these 255's just aren't big enough.

It’s annoying really. I take one of the three main east-west roads in Boca, (which happens to be the middle one) east bound until I hit I-95, unfortunately they are expanding the road, so they put up a dividing wall and have shrunken the 3 lanes, thus it’s a really tight fit, and I often find myself in-between a car and the dividing wall with maybe 1 ft on either side, and closing…it’s too close for my comfort.

I finally get on I-95, going northbound, trying to A) merge onto the damn highway, since people tend to merge at 40 mph and people already on the highway don’t let you merge because for some reason they are driving on merge lane, B) trying to stay far away from trucks as they have a tendency to throw rocks which can chip my paint and / or crack and / or chip my windshield. I get off at the next intersection, and proceed to drive to the building I work in, which is right off of the intersection, not 1/8 of a mile away.

I don’t particularly enjoy my commute, what with the 80-year-olds in Cadillac’s going 20 mph, but luckily my A4 is a nice place to reside in while I'm stuck in traffic.

I don't think anyone would be scared to race you...for good reason, some people prefer not to drive recklessly on open roads.

Never understood this fascination with street racing (or any kind of racing). I obviously missed Fast and the Furious. Maybe that's why I think "dumbass" every time a Honda Civic with fins and lights under the wheels zips by. Is it really that big an adreneline rush? What am I missing here?

I'm with you on this.. I track my car and autox it regularly. I get the thrills from the track and my competition fix from autox.. street driving is a different kind of enjoyment altogether. I just like driving, even if its within limits.

Wow we have the same commute each day. I find myself finding things to do as well just to get out and drive.

When I did used to drive to work each day (36 miles each way), it was a two lane highway so that meant the left lane was the slow people and the right lane the slower people. Not fun at all.

Oh…a coupe! Those are rare…it looks really nice. The 300Sc was such a departure from the 540K Spezial-Roadster and Spezial-Coupe (both of which are two of the most beautiful cars ever made, IMHO). Just look at the quality of that interior and the travel on those seats:
