    Best
Jcrew cashmere/wool overcoat in tan. So warm, so cheap. Purchased for ~100 in April
Zara jacket. Purchased on sale while in Berlin last March. Good deal... in Euros. Tons of compliments though and it's the perfect non winter jacket
RL puffer jacket in tan. Great jacket that's actually pretty warm without being particularly heavy. More casual than the jcrew overcoat or my peacoat
RL super-heavy sweater (I know this doesn't mean anything). Love it
RL Wool dress pants and Barneys wool dress pants. Massive discount and perfect timing.
Shipley and Halmos polo shirt. Wish I had 8 more of these

    Worst
I really can't think of any in 2011. I don't shop too often and I really take my time on pulling the trigger so I don't have recent regrets (and certainly nothing worth remembering).

    Best (I wear a lot)

F+B Bolan dark brown workboots. Love these things. Fit like a glove, broken in but not abused.
Black wash R&B denim jacket. Nothing too special except it's a great fit on me.
Two pairs of used Alden brogue boots from B&S.

Worst (I get vexed over, then never wear)

Buying way too much outerwear for southern california. I don't need one melton wool jacket, never mind several. I should have just bought a truckload of tees and henleys.
Alden shell cordovan boots. Too heavy, too ugly, don't get the interest in shell.

These are one of things where I think they're gonna be best translated in bigger sizes, and I can understand why you say 'too heavy' - I feel the same way about Aldens most of the time. I like looking at them in pictures but in my size (8? 8.5?) they don't really look that good either. The lasting is off. I think sole weight and height, the lasts - the chunkiness of them comes into their own probably more around size 10 or so.

In theory, I like shell cordo boots.
In practice, they were a bit of a pain in the ass to wear/maintain!
I would have toughed it out but they weren't really my style either.
Kept my pairs of J crew/alden longwings, alden for BB natural PTBs, and two alden brogue boots (pebbled brown & navy nubuck).

    MOST VERSATILE, BEST:
Varvatos Converse black leather hi tops-- work anywhere, anytime, all year, all weather
Varvatos Converse laceless slip ons - slip in, slip out
    Ben Sherman button downs
All Saints buttonless cardigans - great layering spring-fall

French pocket square. Forget who made this but there's a whole mega thread on this somewhere on SF:

    LEAST VERSATILE, BEST:
Hugo silk creme suit! - only worn twice, but good things happened

    WORST:

Happy Socks - sad to say! love the company and designs, but the socks have all ripped.
Drop crotch shorts from OAK NYC - look like a big gray diaper

Saks Fifth Avenue mens collection tie. Shimmery yellow blue. Nice, but where the hell will i wear this???
